A small, almost unknown monument, the John Burns Memorial was erected in honor of one of the Battle of Gettysburg's more unique fighters. A resident of Gettysburg, John Burns was 70 when the battle took place, but when fighting commenced he requested, and was given, permission to fight alongside the Bucktail regiment. He aided the Iron Brigade soldiers fighting in the woods close to McPherson Farm and left the battle injured but alive, unnoticed by even the Confederate soldiers he fought against. The monument erected to this valiant, stubborn man sits on the hillside of McPherson Ridge where he fought, portraying a likeness of the man with his musket held tightly in his hand.
Open daily sunrise - sunset.
